| The
Arsenal captain and centre back, Adams is an England international
and has been at Arsenal for all of his professional career.
He joined Arsenal as a schoolboy in November 1980, progressing
to an Apprentice in April 1983 and became a full-time professional
on 30th January 1984. He is favourite to take over as England
captain following the retirement of Alan Shearer from international
football. Despite his defensive qualities Adams is not frightened
to get forward, particularly for set-pieces, and his battling
qualities and his commitment are second to none.
Tony
Adams' 1999-2000 domestic season was troubled by injury.
The player suffered from a catalogue of a double hernia,
foot problems, long standing back pain and groin trouble
and as a result he was forced to miss several Arsenal
and England fixtures. He made only one appearances at
Euro 2000, though he did play seven times at International
level during that season.
Back
problems and an ankle injury also plagued him in the 1998-99
season, though he did contribute several vital goals from
set-pieces throughout that campaign, including one against
Panathinaikos and another against Manchester United, both
in the space of 10-days.
His
ankle injury has caused him problems for some time and
he came back from some intensive treatment in the South
of France in December '97, to fight his way back to some
peak performances when it looked as though his career
might have been on the downgrade. His earlier problems
with alcohol and drug abuse appear to be well behind him.
He
has served time in prison for drink driving related offences.
