Ashley
Cole, a promising left wing-back and England Youth international,
came through the ranks of the Arsenal youth scheme and
made his first team debut against Middlesbrough in last
season's Worthington Cup. He was subsequently loaned out
to Crystal Palace in Nationwide Division One, in order
to gain some valuable first team experience. He appeared
fourteen times for Palace, scoring once, and on his return
to Highbury he was given his Premiership debut in the
final game of the season against Newcastle United.
This
season Cole was given his chance in the England Under-21
team and scored on his debut, he also scored Arsenal's
only goal of the game when they drew 1-1 at Bradford City
in the Premiership clash at Valley Parade, where he was
given the full 90-minutes on the pitch. He made his Champions
League debut when he appeared in the home game against
Sparta Prague, replacing Silvinho at half-time.
