Thierry
Henry started life as a winger at Monaco, winning the
French Championship whilst still in his teens. He stirred
up some controversy in the summer of 1997 when he signed
contracts with both Real Madrid and Monaco and FIFA had
to step in to settle the dispute, which ended with Henry
remaining at Monaco.
He
had a brief and relatively unsuccessful time at Juventus
in Italy's Serie-A before joining up with Arsene Wenger,
his former coach at Monaco, when he signed for Arsenal
for a fee of £10.5m in August 1999. Wenger wasted
no time in converting him from a winger into a central
striker and the player responded by developing into a
lethal goalscorer, one of the very best in the Premiership.
Although he did take a little time to find his feet he
has since gone from strength to strength.
A
full French international, Henry was a member of the French
World Cup winning squad in 1998, scoring three goals at
the Finals. He went on to shine at Euro 2000 , again picking
up a winners medal with France.
