An
England Under-21 international, Upson arrived at Highbury
from Luton Town in 1997 for £1m, and was seen as
a long term replacement for the ageing defence, though
he has found it very hard to claim a regular first team
place at Arsenal. The arrivals of Luzhny and Silvinho
have made appearances for Upson thin on the ground.
His
performances for the England Under-21 side have been particularly
impressive and it seems to be only a matter of time before
he gains a regular first team place.
He
ruptured a cruciate knee ligament in Arsenal's Premiership
game against Leicester City in December 1999 and returned
to action for this season's Worthington Cup defeat by
Ipswich Town.
