  ITALY - Latest News

  28.01.02 - CAVASIN SACKED - Lecce coach Alberto Cavasin finally got the push after his side slumped to a 3-1 home defeat to Brescia. Cavasin can be regarded as being a little bit unlucky as his Lecce team were a revelation last year, with the the unfashionable coach being named being 'Serie-A Coach of the Season' by his fellow professionals. This season his side have suffered from several injury problems.

  28.01.02 - BJORKLUND COMPLETES MOVE - Swedish International Joachim Bjorklund has completed a £1.5m move to Sunderland. Bjorklund has only played 18-times for Venezia since joining them in the summer. He is awaiting international clearance to see if he can play in tomorrow's local derby game against Middlesbrough.

  28.01.02 - PLAYERS UNITED IN RESPECT FOR MERO - A one minute silence was observed before all of this week's Serie-A games as the players payed their respecst to Vittorio Mero, whose funeral was held on Friday morning. There were amazing scenes at Lecce, where Mero's shirt was displayed on the pitch before the game.

  28.01.02 - DIVINE INTERVENTION FOR FILIPPINI - Brescia's Emanuele Filippini scored his first ever Serie-A goal during yesterday's 3-1 win at Lecce and he believes he had some 'divine' help, and not just from the return of Roberto Baggio, the divine ponytail. Filippini, who roomed with Vittorio Mero, the Brescia player who died in a traffic accident this week, dedicated his goal to his departed friend and believes that this spirit was there with him as he scored.

  28.01.02 - 15-YEAR-OLD MAKES DEBUT - Valerei Bojinov, Lecce's 15-year-old Bulgarian player made his debut Serie-A appearance yesterday in Lecces' game against Brescia. Bojinov came on in the 69th minute as a replacement for Balleri and showed tremendous promise in the short time he had on the pitch. At 15 years, 11 months and 12 days Bojinov became the fifth youngest player ever to grace the Serie-A stage behind Amedeo Amadei, Gianni Rivera, Aristide Rossi and Giuseppe Campione.

  28.01.02 -PLEASURE AND PAIN PRINCIPLE - Roma midfielder Marcos Assuncao scored a fantastic goal with one of his trademark free-kicks to give Romaa 15th minute lead in their game against Piacenza yesterday, but injured his left knee only minutes later. He underwent a succesful operation today and is expected back in action for the Lecce game on March 3rd.

  28.01.02 - TWO DEBUT AT THE DELLE ALPI - Both teams gave debuts to new players in yesterday's game between Torino and Lazio. Torino youngster Franco came on as a late substitute in the 80th minute and Lazio's Evacuo replaced Stefano Fiore in the 77th minute.

  28.01.02 - CORDOBA DEBUTS - Paraguayan international goalkeeper Oscar Cordoba made his Serie-A debut for Perugia yesterday in their 3-1 win over Verona. He received a warm welcome from the Perugia tifosi but didn't have a lot to do during the game, making two saves and letting in one goal.

  28.01.02 - PENALTY HIT AND MISS - Juve's Alessandro Del Piero and Milan's Andrei Shevchenko both scored and missed from the penalty spot in yesterday's games. Shevchenko missed his 4th penalty out of 21 as Milan went down to Udinese at the San Siro but also made his 17th conversion from the spot.

  28.01.02 - ATALANTA LATEST - The Atalanta squad will return to training tomorrow afternoon, where the respective conditions of Orlandini and Bellini will be assessed. Orlandini is set for a return to full training with the rest of the squad.

  28.01.02 - OLIVE'S INJURY - Renato Olive has left hospital in Parma, where examination showed there to be no serious damage, though he has sustained a fractured rib which could keep him out of action for the next month. A final assesment will be made on Wednesday when he is due to undergo a scan.

  28.01.02 - BOLOGNA LATEST - Fabio Pecchia and Giulio Falcone are due to have scans on their respective injuries on Wednesday . Salvatore Fresi is expected to be able to make the substitutes bench for the game against Venezia but Beppe Signori isn't now expected back until the game against Inter.

  28.01.02 - BRESCIA TRAINING - The Brescia squad returned to training today in order to prepare for their re-scheduled Coppa Italia game with Parma. Roberto Baggio was given the day off in order to rest. Yllana is expected to start in the Coppa Italia game as Emanuele Filippini will be disqualified. Petruzzi, Bonera and Sussi will all miss the next weekend's Serie-A game after picking up Yellow Cards on Sunday, so Kozminski, Calori and Esposito look likely to start.

  28.01.02 - CHIEVO LATEST - Alex Rinaldi has arrived on loan from Atalanta, with Paolo Foglio going the other way after Atalanta gave Chievo co-ownership of Stefano Lorenzi.

  28.01.02 - CHIEVO TRAINING - The Chievo squad returned to training today in order to prepare for Wednesday's re-scheduled game with Lazio.

  28.01.02 - FIORENTINA TRAINING - The Viola squad were given the day off today in order to rest but Chiesa, Taddei and Adani did undertake some training exercises. The remainder of the squad are expected to take a double training session tomorrow.

  28.01.02 - INTER TRAINING - The Inter squad were given the day off today in order to rest.

  28.01.02 - RONALDO LATEST - Ronaldo underwent a scan on his injured left leg today. There was no evidence of any muscle damage but he will visit a specialist in France on Thursday, where he will be accompanied by the club's doctor, in order to find out how much exercise he can take without risking further damage.

  28.01.02 - JUVE PLAYERS IN CAR CRASH - Enzo Maresca, Mark Iuliano, David Trezeguet and Gianluca Zambrotta all escaped unhurt after the car they were travelling in was involved in an accident after Sunday's game at Chievo.

  28.01.02 - LAZIO LATEST - Giannichedda underwent a scan today, where it was revealed that there is no lasting damage to his right foot. He is expected to be available for Wednesday's re-scheduled game against Chievo. Simone Inzaghi continues to improve inhis condition and he should also make the starting line-up for Wednesday's game, as should Peruzzi. The goalkeeper had to leave the field of play at half-time during the game against Torino as he was suffering from a stomach problem.

  28.01.02 - LECCE TRAINING - Cimirotic returned to some training today after missing last week through injury. The rest of the squad will return to full training tomorrow despite losing their coach, Cimiorotic is expected to join them.

  28.01.02 - MILAN TRAINING - The Milan squad will return to training tomorrow where Costacurta's condiiton will be assessed. The player appeared to pull his right hamstring during Sunday's game. Ambrosini and Rui Costa may not yet be ready to resume full training.
  28.01.02 - PARMA TRAINING - The Parma squad returned to training this afternoon in order to prepare for their re-arranged Coppa Italia Semi-Final game against Brescia. Diana was given the day off as his father has just died. Bonazzoli and Bolano took part in some of the excercises but Appiah and Sensini were given the day off in order to rest. Maini was missing through injury and Mboma is still with the Cameroon squad at the Nations Cup. The squad will return to training tomorrow morning before some of them attending the funeral of Diana's father in the afternoon.

  28.01.02 - PERUGIA TRAlNING - The Perugia squad were given the day off today in order to rest, they will resume training tomorrow in order to prepare for next weekend's trip to Udine.

  28.01.02 - PIACENZA TRAINING - The Piacenza squad were given the day off today in order to rest, they will resume training tomorrow afternoon. Both Sacchetti and Ambrosetti could be sold off before the transfer deadline.

  28.01.02 - ROMA TRAlNING - The Roma squad were given the day off today in order to rest, they will resume training tomorrow in order to prepare for next weekend's trip to Florence. Walter Samuel wil have his condition assessed tomorrow, the player complained of some muscle pain prior to Sunday's game against Piacenza.

  28.01.02 - KONSEL'S TRIBUTE - Totti, Montella, Zago, Tommasi, Delvecchio, Candela, Cafu and Balbo have all gone to Vienna in order to attend a special game in honour of Austrian, and former Roma goalkeeper, Michael Konsel. but Capello has given strict instructions that they are not to play in the match.

  28.01.02 - TORINO TRAINING - The Torino squad were given the day off today in order to rest. They are due to return to training tomorrow afternoon in order to prepare for Saturday evening's game with Inter.

  28.01.02 - MANFREDINI OUT - Thomas Manfredini will be out for a month after being injured during yesterday's 3-2 victory over AC Milan. Manfredini underwent a scan on his injured knee today and it revealed some damage to the ligaments in his right knee. Pieri suffered a blow to his left thight that could prevent him from training until Thursday.

  28.01.02 - VENEZIA WARNING LIST - Ighli Vannucchi has joined Bilica, Pavan, Bettarini, Andersson and Valtolina on the 'diffidati' list. All six players are only one Yellow Card away from suspension.

  28.01.02 - VENEZIA TRAINING - The Venezia squad were given the day off today in order to rest, they are expected back in training tomorrow afternoon. Bressan's condition will be assessed tomorrow after he injured his back during last Friday's training.

  28.01.02 - VERONA LATEST - The Verona squad were given the day off today in order to rest. Camoranesi and Cannavaro will both miss next weekend's game against Atalanta through disqualification. Dainelli looks likley to start but Giuseppe Colucci and Cassetti will both be competing for the one remaining place in the starting eleven.
