'El Matador' Marcelo Salas moved from Universidad de Chile
to River Plate in 1996 as a replacement for the Argentine
striker Hernan Crespo, who had just left for Serie-A in
Italy. Two years later Salas was to follow Crespo to Italy
, moving to Lazio in preference to moving to Manchester
United.
One
of the world's best strikers, Salas first came to prominence
in England when he scored twice at Wembley as Chile beat
England in an international friendly. He went on to star
in the '98 World Cup, forming a great partnership with
Inter's Ivan Zamorano.
Salas
was initially a great success at Lazio but he struggled
for form most of last season, and his path crossed with
Crespo's once again when Lazio lined him up as a part
of a swop deal for the Argentine last summer. Salas refused
to move to Parma and a proposed move to Inter, where he
would once again team up with Zamorano, fell through at
the last minute.
The
recent injury to Claudio Lopez allowed Salas back into
the first team at Lazio and he has seized his opportunity
with a return to some of the finest form of his career.
