Lippi Defends Himself ! - Marcello Lippi, the Inter Milan coach,
has defended himself from criticism of his virtual refusal to play Roberto
Baggio and Alvaro Recoba after reportedly giving assurances that they
were both part of his plans. Earlier this month Baggio has showed his
displeasure at being left on the bench. after Lippi has assured him
of a place in the starting eleven at the start of the season, by critiscising
the coach in the Italian press. Recoba could have remained at Venezia
at the start of this season but Lippi was keen to stress that he was
an important part of his plans and though 'El Chino' had not spoken
publicly about being given few starting opportunities it was well known
that he was available for transfer if the right offer had come along.
The criticism of Lippi mounted after Recoba's all round display in Sunday's
game against Verona and Baggio's winning goal in the same game.Lippi
had been forced to play the pair as Vieri, Ronaldo and Zamorano were
all missing through injury, and it could be argued that they have both
earned their places in the team. Lippi maintains that he always does
hat is best for the squad as a whole.
